Open Midlands Garden: Hydrangea Lodge, owned by Marita Kruger, is a picturesque garden nestled within a rich historical landscape. Established in the 1950s, this informal cottage-style garden has matured into a serene haven where nature and time have worked together to create something truly special.
Majestic specimen trees form the backbone of the garden, including towering Copper Beeches, Liriodendron (Tulip Tree), Liquid Ambers, Taxodium (Swamp Cypress) and stately Oaks. Together they create a soaring, interconnected canopy that shelters the garden below in dappled light and shifting seasonal colour.
Beneath this living framework, vibrant plantings of rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas bring texture and brilliance to every layer of the garden. Their seasonal displays transform the landscape, offering bursts of colour in spring and summer, while autumn introduces rich golds and russets among the trees.
Winding informal pathways encourage slow wandering and quiet discovery, with each turn revealing new combinations of foliage, form and colour. Hydrangea Lodge is a garden designed for lingering. A place where visitors can reconnect with nature beneath ancient trees and experience the gentle rhythm of a garden shaped over decades.
This is a landscape where history, maturity and natural beauty come together in quiet harmony, offering a deeply restorative garden experience throughout the seasons.
