The finals of the both the Umgeni Waterfall Bowling Club Men's and Ladies Singles' Championships were played on Saturday, 14th June. The winners of the titles were Barry Bedworth and Yvonne Foot. Congratulations to both Yvonne and Barry.

Members are reminded to play the outstanding pairs matches as soon as possible.

A very successful tournament sponsored by Halfway Toyota, Howick was held on Father's Day. Theo von Mollendorff of Halfway Toyota, Howick presented the prizes to all the winners. The overall winners were Mike Andrew, Colleen Andrew and Brian Ravno of Howick Bowling Club.

Our gratitude is extended to all who generously donated raffle prizes: Shoprite, Howick Pharmacy, Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Compu-Rite and club members . Thank you, too, to the members and everyone who worked so hard to make the day the success it was. R300 was donated for the 'spider' by all the players and this money will be given to the National Association of Blind Bowlers.

Felicity Spence originally from Natal, could not resist the draw of her home province. After spending time in the UK, the Free State and Johannesburg she is now happily settled in Howick as the new owner of Supa Sub.

The Howick High School Dance Company participated in the annual Funk production at Hilton College which took place from 19 to 21 May. Now in its 15th year, the Hilton College Theatre's 'FUNK' continues to unite schools and give Dramatic Arts students & teachers the opportunity to create and rehearse pieces of dance theatre for public performance. Each school created a 6 minute piece of dance choreography integrating any type of musical or textual accompaniment. Schools are challenged to generate meaning and artistic integrity through dance choreography; to challenge young people to work outside of their comfort zones and to be relevant. Howick High gave a beautiful performance with their dance to songs entitled 'Young and beautiful' and 'Wasting my young years', choreographed jointly by Mrs Debbi Le Roux and the group.

Howick High School's 'Achiever of the Week' on 6 June 2014 was Kayleigh Szente in Grade 8. Kayleigh is a member of the PMB Children's Choir and she will be travelling during the July holidays to Latvia where the choir will be competing in the World Choir Games.  (Pictured below)

If we want customers to buy from us, it is only logical that we understand the best way to help them do this. As business owners and sellers, it is vital to know what the key steps are for the sales team to apply consistently and, thereby, ensure that there is the biggest likelihood that each and every customer will buy.

An outline of the sales process steps is as follows:

1. Meet & Greet
• first contact with customers
• put the customer at ease
• build rapport – likeability, confidence and trust

2. Qualification
• identification of the customers wants and needs
• identification of decision makers and influencers
• identification of the customer's budget and financial options

3. Presentation
• showing customers the product/service most suited to them
• building customer desire
• gauging the customer's agreement - the relevance to them regarding what is offered

4. Demonstration
• a trial of the goods or services by the customer
• direct understanding of relevance and building desire
• confirmation of choice selection

5. Offer
• summary of customer's needs and product suitability
• proposition to the customers

6. Sale
• objection handling
• confirmation of payment options and terms
• confirmation of next steps to handing over goods/services to the customers

This basic framework can be used as the basis for any sales team to get more sales. From working through each of these steps the sales team can adapt the best practices for them be it in a retail environment through to professional services, tailoring each process to meet their customers' needs. For instance, in a clothes shop a demonstration would be encouraging more customers to try on the clothes, whereas, for a professional-services firm the demonstration may take the form of known third-party testimonials, case studies or even site visits.

The key is to have a defined series of steps with processes within each step, leading the customer through each step so that their needs are clearly defined whilst building on their desire to buy. A good sales process will not only lead to more sales, but more profit and greater customer satisfaction so it's highly recommended to do this for every firm.

Introducing various new techniques in fine art, Amy Leo held her second Art Exhibition at Corner Post over the past weekend. Once again, the mood was excellent in this tranquil setting where attendees could relax with a delightful plate of food and beverage whilst viewing the art on display.

Peter White was born in the Transvaal in 1962. A keen sportsman, he excelled at golf, which he played at Provincial level when he was just fifteen. At high school he discovered photography. It soon became a passion, and he spent many hours in the school dark room where the learned the fundamentals of the art. His National Service in the South African Defence Force was carried out in the State President's Guard.

Photography took a back seat while Peter forged an extremely successful career as a broker. This came to a sudden end when, aged 26, he was involved in a serious car accident which left him in a coma. During his two year recovery, Peter rediscovered his love of photography, and set his sights on becoming a professional photographer.

A highlight in his career is the Inauguration of Nelson Mandela where he was one of two photographers at the stage at the Union Buildings photographing the Great Man and high profile guests.

He has devoted over 25 years to capturing literally thousands of high profile and family occasions, where his passion is to ensure that the client receives an excellent record of the occasion.

At the KZN Conservancies Association AGM held recently, Nikki Brighton received a certificate for outstanding commitment and contribution to the natural environment of KwaZulu Natal, in recognition of her efforts to promote the cause of conservation in the province. Despite being relatively new to the Conservancy movement, Nikki has had a big impact. Dargle Conservancy was instrumental in setting up the Midlands Conservancies Forum (MCF) a few years ago. "Our mission has always been to work proactively with other organisations to achieve a greater Midlands area that is wisely managed by all to ensure long term environmental sustainability, so it was an obvious step for our committee at the time." she says.

Malcolm Stainbank, Chair of KZNCA, said "Nikki is one of those rare people who has insight, passion and lives her values. She believes in putting people into conservation, can take a fabulous photo and match it with beautiful words. She is an inspiration to many. She mentors people with love and patience and instils hope in so many children and young people. She treads lightly on the earth, giving more than she receives, with no expectation of reward. We need more like her on the planet."

Nikki believes that conservation cannot just be about fencing things off and protecting certain species. "Painted Reed frogs and Samango monkeys really have no chance if humans do not change their lifestyles and behaviour. Human greed and the very odd idea that one life is more valuable than another has had an enormous impact on our planet," she says, "I don't think we have a clue about what is in store for us, with the rapid onset of Climate Change."

Adamant that it is necessary to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and the industrial food chain, Nikki started the Dargle Local Living initiative which works towards a better, low-carbon and more sustainable future for the Dargle community. "Food is a conservation issue," she says passionately. "The more people who value our biodiversity and the eco-systems on which we all rely, the better the chance they will be used with restraint. We have to change the attitude that the environment is there to exploit."

Sarah Allan Vice-Chair of MCF "Nikki is a firm believer in collaboration which has seen expression in her involvement with the Midlands Conservancies Forum – creating the MCF website and blog and encouraging contributions for the popular Wildlife Sightings. She has been pivotal in securing funding for building community resilience in Mpophomeni, the DUCT river walks, environmental education and leadership projects in the Midlands. Nikki is also the inspiration behind the regular walks of the Midlands, allowing the general public opportunities to enjoy and explore the biodiversity jewels on otherwise inaccessible private land."

Howick High School is proud to share that Kimberleigh van Jaarsveld has been selected for the U18 KZN Girls Hockey Team.

The team will participate in a tournament at the end of June and we wish Kimberleigh every success. Age Quod Agis.
