It’s not unusual today to meet a woman who balances a challenging career with a plethora of household responsibilities, the intricacies of modern childcare and a fulfilling social life. She is certainly no longer lauded for her super-human abilities – it is simply expected of her. The Working Mothers Expo, in partnership with MiWayLife, takes place at the Sandton Convention Centre from the 4th to the 6th of November 2016. This will be the first time that an expo in South Africa will be directly geared to meet the needs of working mothers.

The Tabs in competition sponsored by Halfway Toyota Howick due to be held on Wednesday, 12 October was postponed due to poor weather. While rain is most welcome it is not conducive to spending time on a bowling green. The combination of rain and cold winds made being outdoors rather unpleasant. This competition will now take place on Wednesday, 19 October.

In contrast, league matches were played on Saturday in extreme heat with temperatures reaching a high of 37 deg C. Sympathies are extended to all players who were overcome by the heat and had to withdraw from their respective matches.

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.
All you need to play this amazing game is a GPS or a phone with GPS ability.

The aim, as noted above, is to find a hidden geocache container, which can be something as large as a suitcase or as small as your finger tip.
World-wide there is something like 2 million geocaches in just about every country in the world with over 6 million geocachers looking for them.
In the Hilton/Howick/Midlands area there are over 500 geocaches in some of the most amazing places that you would normally never go to.

Did you know, for instance, that there is a 800m long old railway tunnel under the Shell garage in Hilton ? Well there is and inside the tunnel there is a geocache.
Then there are old railway stations all over Worlds View and Winterskloof all of which have a geocache hidden somewhere. Do you know where Boshoffweg, Winterskloof, Teteluku, Ketelfontein, Hilton, Leonards and Aradec Railway Stations are ? Go geocaching and you will find out.
But there are other places to go to where the views are just amazing. What about the Worlds View Look Out Point, or Beacon Hill above Howick, or on a lonely bridge on a lonely road overlooking Midmar. And there are more secret places like the Garden of Remembrance in Hilton and have you ever been to the old Astronomical Observatory in Worlds View ? There is a geocache there.
And what about the place where the first heavier-than-air flight took place, not in America but right here in the Midlands, in the Karkloof. On your way there stop in at the Karkloof Conservancy and look for the geocaches hidden in the Hides there.
So, geocaches are all over the place and in places where you might never ever go.
To become a Geocacher costs nothing. Just go to the Geocaching website at www.geocaching.com and register. When registering, give yourself a “handle” which might, or might not, be your own name but something that you will remember.

Another release of a TOPS (threatened or protected species) species!

FREEME KZN released this Serval cat last  week at a selected FREEME KZN release site.

Since this is a soft release, whereby food is placed at the release site over a two week period (this period can be extended based on the monitoring information we gather) so the Serval can feed while adjusting to its new environment. Should the Serval not find sufficient prey to feed herself within this period, she will usually return to the release site where she will find food and can sustain herself until she has adapted to her new environment.

Always a fabulous feeling setting one of these magnificent animals free after months of dedicated work.

The people of the Catholic parish of Howick made a very generous donation this weekend to the Denis Hurley Centre from the funds they have raised this year as part of their 75th Jubilee. This brand new centre in the heart of Durban serves some of the poorest and most needy people: feeding 300 homeless people every day; providing a clinic that serves 2,000 patients for free every month; offering classes and job skills programmes to refugees and the unemployed. The Centre is named after the late Catholic Archbishop who is well remembered by many older residents of Howick. Marj Barrett from Amberfield recalls playing badminton with him 70 years ago. Hurley’s great ally in the Struggle, Anglican bishop emeritus Michael Nuttall also lives in Howick.

In the photograph, Nonjabulo Mlotshwa (left) and Fr Cecil Dowling (right) are handing over a cheque for R10 000 to the director of the Centre, Raymond Perrier, who was visiting for the weekend and spoke at all of the Masses. “I am thrilled by the warm welcome I received and the generosity of the parish. The people of St Joseph’s have proven that it is not true when they say: ‘Out of sight, out of mind’. Instead people here really do care for those who are suffering in our cities.”

The weather is having fun and playing more games than local bowlers. Once again, a sponsored tabs in competition had to be postponed due to a most welcome rainfall on Wednesday afternoon. This competition sponsored by J Leslie Smith and The Health Nut is now due to be played on Wednesday, 05 October.

On Saturday,the ladies of Umgeni Waterfall were fortunate enough to be able to complete the First League Match of the season before the club premises were hit by a hailstorm. Our opponents from Collegians had not been gone long when the hail started. One of our players was stranded under the outside canopy until the heavy hail stopped. (See Photo)
