MommyHeart is the fulfilment of a dream of two friends committed to and passionate about antenatal education and postnatal support. We are both registered nurses and midwives, and in addition to this we are both mums, and have experienced fairly recently, and in an ongoing way, the trials and triumphs of this incredible journey into motherhood.

Our most important goal is to come alongside other mums and mums-to-be, and to provide support and information. We want to see each mum moving forward into this exciting new stage of life with joy and confidence, and with a sense of security in knowing that you are not alone. We know, and hope to instill in you the knowledge, that as a mum you hold in your hands and hearts everything you need for your pregnancy and the early days of your little one’s life.

We offer antenatal education, breastfeeding advice and postnatal support, and try to make this support as accessible as possible for pregnant ladies by offering courses in a number of locations, and providing postnatal support when and where it is most needed through in-hospital and home visits. We want to see mum’s prepared for, and supported through their pregnancies, and into the early weeks and months of their babies lives. We are mums ourselves and we always try to keep it real, as we support you through the ups and downs of mommy-hood!

As we are all aware, the effects for the drought are devastating and far reaching. In an effort to help this terrible situation Howick Pre-Primary School has started a Water Wednesday Project. So what does that mean?

Each Wednesday we encourage the children to bring a bottle of Grey water to school. This ‘dirty’ water is then used to water our school gardens and grass. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to teach our little children the importance of saving water and ways to re-use water. So far this term we have managed to re-use 525L of grey water.

In what can only be seen as a race directors dream, defending champion and new Olympic Bronze Medalist Henri Schoeman has confirmed his entry into this Saturdays Mandela Day Triathlon.

Schoeman won this event last year at a canter and with his current form suggesting that only the triathlon gods can derail his quest to win the title again in 2016. Schoeman is red hot at the moment and one of the world’s top Triathletes. To have him on the start line this Saturday says a lot about his commitment to the sport of triathlon in SA and KZN especially. A fitting tribute to Nelson Mandela to have SA’s newest Bronze Medalist back to defend the title

His appearance at the race will certainly boost the numbers and athletes are sure to flock to Midmar to catch a glimpse of the bronze medalist and see him put his talents on show. There are a lot of youngsters that have been inspired by his achievements last week in RIO and no doubts, he will have his hands full to keep the young and old fans at bay.

Henri will add a touch of brilliance to this prestige event which is hailed as the premier Olympic Distance Triathlon in SA. Clinton Gravett who was runner up in 2015 will also be back to defend his second place title and see how he fairs compared to Olympic Bronze Medalist Schoeman.

With a prize purse of R120 000 to be won and age category prizes, athletes from around SA will be flocking to test their winter fitness.

Late entries will be allowed on race day.

Last month saw, Mr Terrence Manthe, drive away in a Brand new Hyundai i10 Glides. Merrivale SUPERSPAR were thrilled to hand over the keys to Mr Manthe after he won in the annual Spar 'Win a Car' competition. What a fabulous incentive to shop at 'My Spar' Merrivale SUPERSPAR.

There is soccer fever at Howick High School this term with the introduction of girls’ teams this year. Both the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, sponsored by Honchos, have begun their season on a high note and we are delighted to have had eight pupils selected to play for Midlands Soccer teams. Skye Hasseriis, Jayme Tegg, Robyn Campbell and Lorimer O’Bree have been selected for the U16 Girls Midlands team and the following boys have been selected for Midlands teams in their age group: Samukelo Ngcobo (U14), Aphiwe Shange (U15), Calvin Mayo (U16) and Anele Nzuza (U19).

The Grade 5 pupils of Howick Preparatory School spent time down in Durban last week as part of their Natural Science and Life Science curriculum. Whilst down in Durban they spent a day at uShaka Marine World learning about the ocean and ecology and also spent time at Mini Town studying the history of Durban.

Wood is one of the most unique materials available and it has functional and aesthetic characteristics that are often impossible to recreate synthetically.
Since the beginning of time, humankind has relied on wood for many essential needs, from the functional to the aesthetic and spiritual. People who work with wood have a special relationship with it and each piece of wood is unique.

The need for a book covering the wood properties of indigenous Southern African tree species has often been expressed, especially by woodworkers who use the woods and those who would like to, but are unsure of what uses the different woods are best suited to and how the woods will respond to different processes, treatments and environmental conditions.

Apart from chapters covering various aspects of the use of Southern African woods, the book includes technical data on 120 different species, with information on the mechanical properties of the wood, workability and durability. High-quality colour photographs of the bark, the wood (untreated and treated) and beautiful end-grain macrographs assist with identification.

Who is it for?
Written in a conversational style, the book is accessible to a number of users: from professional woodworkers, designers, architects, wood dealers and wood collectors, to hobbyists and those who simply love trees and wood. The book will also be very useful as a research aid and educational tool.

What else is out there?
There is no other book of this kind and with this layout available on wood anywhere in the world. What makes it unique is that it includes the hard echnical data with comments from people who have actually worked with the wood, plus providing photographs of bark, wood and worked items.

As part of the week’s learning theme on ‘Vegetables’, the Gr R and RR children from Heritage House Preschool donned their gumboots, rolled up their sleeves, took their spades and watering cans, along to visit a local old age home, to plant veggies for the residents of their Frail care. After a busy time planting, the children were treated to delicious vegetable soup provided by the hosts. Fun was had by all ‘young and elderly’ alike. Each child got to take home, a mini veggie garden which they had planted in a bottle. More photo's in the Heritage House Preschool gallery.

On Friday, 19th August, a number of Grade 8 and 9 Howick High School pupils presented their science projects at the Central KZN ‘Eskom Expo for Young Scientists’ at the Durban University of Technology. A total of 488 projects from schools throughout KZN were exhibited. We are proud of our Howick High School scientists who brought home the following awards:

The Howick Highlander 'weekend', started off on 30 July, with an estimated crowd of 1000 people, who gathered at dawn at the memorial cairn built to remember the 6000 rhinos killed by poachers since 2007. The 1st Howick Cub and Scout Group, worked with the Kingsley Holgate Foundation and Project Rhino KZN, to start a global awareness campaign in the Scout Movement on rhino poaching and wildlife crime.

The Ring of Scouts had 560 members, which will be a challenge to other organizations to try and beat this with a similar message for our Endangered Rhino.

Also In attendance for the #rhinoshoutout, Sibusiso Vilane (extreme adventurer and Chief Scout for South Africa).

Howick High School’s Acting Principal, Mr Dave Bailey, congratulates matric pupil, Hawa Chandlay, who achieved first place in South Africa for the 2016 Bio-Science Global Olympiad with a result of 90%.

Howick Preparatory School pupil, 10 year old Caleb Archer who is in Grade 4, was crowned the SA Downhill Champion for 2016 in his category at the South African MTB Championships held at Cascades in Pietermaritzburg on the 17 July. Caleb has now won the triple crown after also winning the KZN and African Continental Downhill Championships. This is an outstanding achievement considering that Caleb only started downhill racing just over a year ago after watching his father participate. The World Champs will be held later on in the year during the month of October in Europe.
